Sometimes history repeats itself.
Sometimes it just comes pretty darned close.
Oklahoma got some good news and some bad news Sunday as the NCAA Tournament's bracket was released.
The good news?
The Sooners (43-12), who have had to travel to Michigan and Massachusetts the past two seasons for regional play, will be hosting their own regional for the first time since 2005.
The bad news?
They'll likely be on the road for the Super Regional round.
OU was named the No. 10 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, and the distinction left the Sooners hosting Arkansas (36-27), Tulsa (34-23) and Oregon at Marita Hynes Field.
OU opens up regional play against the Ducks (35-27) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The Golden Hurricane will play the Razorbacks at 5 p.m.
“Absolutely, I’m pleasantly surprised,” OU coach Patty Gasso said. “I guess after last year, I don’t know idea what to expect anymore. I’m very please that we’re hosting. I think the 10th seed is pretty much where we belong.”
The Sooners beat Oregon 2-1 in that 2005 regional championship game en route to a two-and-out Super Regional at Arizona, which, coincidentally, is where they would end up next week if they’re able to pull out a regional championship this time around.
The Wildcats (36-16) were named the No. 7 overall seed, and the two-time defending champions are on the road in New York for the Hempstead Regional, hosted by Hofstra. They’ll take on Canisius (38-12) Friday night.
Arizona is getting the “Oklahoma” treatment this season, having to travel across the country despite being ranked in the top 10 and earning a top-10 seed in the tournament.
