MANHATTAN, Kan. — Oklahoma’s dreams of winning a Big 12 Conference baseball title died Friday night. Its hopes of entering the Big 12 tournament coming off a series victory drowned Saturday.

The Sooners dropped Game 2 of their three-game series at Kansas State, 5-2, Saturday night. The loss sank OU’s record to 35-19 overall and 12-11 in the Big 12 Conference.

OU cannot finish any higher than fourth in the conference standings and will either be the No. 4 or the No. 5 seed and will face Baylor in the first round of the Big 12 tournament Wednesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.

The downward slide OU was on heading into the Kansas State series continued Saturday. Kansas State led the entire way and improved to 39-15 overall and 16-7 in the Big 12 with Saturday’s victory.

Ralph Garza Jr., who made his first start since March, took the loss to drop to 4-1. The freshman right-hander gave up three runs on six hits over 5 1-3 innings. Garza kept OU in the game, but everything fell apart in the sixth and seventh innings.

Already down 1-0 in the sixth, OU coach Sunny Golloway turned to Dillon Overton to limit the damage. With the bases loaded and one out, Overton induced a potential double play ball from Lance Miles. Shortstop Jack Mayfield flipped to second baseman Hector Lorenzana for the first out, but Lorenzana’s throw to first base wound up in OU’s dugout, allowing two runs to score.

Kansas State tacked on two more runs on Mitch Meyer’s two-run single in the seventh inning.

OU, which only had six hits, didn’t get a run until the ninth inning. Joe Flattery (4-4) held the Sooners to three hits over 5 1-3 innings to get the victory.

Jake Matthys picked up the save despite giving up an RBI single to Lorenzana, who went 2 for 4, and allowing him to score on a fielder’s choice in the ninth inning.

The teams return to Tointon Stadium at 11 a.m. today for the regular-season finale.
