Sooners win close over Tigers

NORMAN — Oklahoma was nowhere without Shelby Pendley Saturday afternoon at Marita Hynes Field.

The Sooner third baseman — and more and more, pitcher, too — had two of the Sooners’ four hits against LSU and, because she did, OU prevailed 2-1 over a good bunch of Tigers.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Pendley did not simply tie the game with a leadoff home run off LSU pitcher Baylee Corbello, but broke up Corbello’s no-hitter to make it happen.

Then, in the seventh inning, with Erin Miller aboard after a walk and standing on third base thanks to a walk issued to Georgia Casey and a single from Destinee Martinez, Pendley came up with one out and ended the game with a bases-loaded walk-off single to center field.

Making yet another appearance in the circle, Pendley also pitched a scoreless inning, issuing a walk and two hits but no runs. Georgia Casey pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up a walk, but not hits or runs.

Kelsey Stevens got the win in the circle, pitching the first 31⁄3 innings before coming back in get LSU’s last six outs.

She pitched 51⁄3 innings in all and moved her record to 13-5 on the season, and managed to give up just a single run in the fourth inning despite allowing six hits and issuing five walks against three strikeouts.

Corbello fell to 9-4.

LSU lost despite doubling the Sooners up with eight hits. OU survived by getting the Tigers to strand 12 baserunners.

OU moved to 20-8 on the season, while the Tigers fell to 19-11.

The two teams meet again at noon today back at Marita Hynes Field.
