Ellenberg on Wade award watchlist

NORMAN — You can’t win it if you’re not on the list and Oklahoma’s Aaryn Ellenberg, at least, is on the list.

It is the Wade Trophy and it’s reserved for the finest player in women’s college basketball each season. Ellenberg, who, along with departed senior Joanna McFarland, led the Sooners to upsetting their way into another Sweet 16 last season, is on the “Wade Watch” list, announced Tuesday.

An honorable-mention All-American last season and an All-Big 12 selection last season and this preseason, Ellenberg averaged 18.7 points per game during the 2012-13 campaign and set a new Sooner program record with 115 made 3-pointers.

Baylor guard Odyssey Sims, the conference’s preseason player of the year is also on the list. In all, the 25 players on the list represent 18 different programs and seven different conferences.

Ellenberg and the Sooners play their first exhibition game Nov. 2 against Cameron University at Lloyd Noble Center. The regular season begins Nov. 8 at home against Stetson.
