Sooners win season-opener

OMAHA, Neb. — Right off the tip, 12th-ranked Oklahoma looked like a team on the ropes at Creighton on Saturday afternoon.

Until they didn’t.

The Blue Jays scored eight of the game’s first 10 points, but the Sooners got 16 of the next 20 and were never challenged.

The season-opener for both teams, OU topped Creighton 69-48 in front of 928 at D.J. Sokol Arena

A better win than it might appear, the Blue Jays were an NCAA tournament team last season and are the preseason favorites to capture the Missouri Valley Conference this season.

“I’m just really proud of their effort and performance on the road,” OU head coach Sherri Coale said. “It’s really hard to start your season on the road, especially against a team the caliber of Creighton.”

Aaryn Ellenberg was the hottest player on the floor, canning 8 of 12 shots and 3 of 4 3-point attempts on the way to 19 points. Whitney Hand scored 14 points while also posting a game-high eight rebounds. Nicole Griffin added eight points and six rebounds from her post position.

“I thought Nicole Griffin established herself early,” Coale said. “She was really good at catching and making extra passes or catching and going to the rim.

“You could tell Creighton had to take that away first and that’s what opened up (Ellenberg) and Whitney for shots in the second half.”

Creighton was led by Ally Jensen’s 13 points.

The Sooners get back on the court at 7 p.m. Wednesday for their home opener against UCLA.
