Sooners complete sweep of Horned Frogs

NORMAN — The weather wasn’t the only thing that started off cold Sunday. Wrapping up a weekend series against TCU, No. 16 Oklahoma went scoreless early while first baseman Matt Oberste went hitless at the plate.

And, while the weather never warmed up, Oberste and the Sooners did, coming alive after falling behind 3-0 and tying the game in the sixth inning before winning it in 4-3 in 10 innings to sweep the series against TCU.

Oberste came through for the Sooners in extra innings, singling up the middle to lead off the tenth inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to second and he narrowly beat a throw to third on a passed ball, Haley Hunter came to the plate with one out and doubled into center field to bring Overstre in for the walk-off victory.

“I was just trying to make contact,” Hunter said of his final at-bat. “I tried too hard, actually, on the first two swings.”

The second game in the past three days OU (22-4, 3-0) won in extra innings, Haley said Sunday’s win was a product of the confidence the Sooners have in close games.

“We have a lot of confidence in these games and these games are a lot of fun,” he said. “We put a lot of emphasis today and coming out and getting the sweep, because that one game could be the difference in a Big 12 championship.”

The Horned Frogs (9-14, 1-5) struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the third with the help of a couple of Sooner mistakes. A hit batter and a walk put two on with no outs and a sacrifice bunt by Boomer White put them in scoring position. That allowed a sacrifice fly by Jantzen Witte to bring in a run and put TCU on the board first. The Horned Frogs would add another run in the inning on Paul Hendrix’s RBI single and make it 3-0 in the fourth on a OU throwing error.
