Broyles gets a call

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Oklahoma wide receiver Ryan Broyles needs three catches to match the NCAA record for receptions in a career.

Because he is averaging 9.4 catches per game this season, it's a pretty safe bet the mark will fall when the third-ranked Sooners face Kansas at 8:15 Saturday night in Lawrence, Kan.

Broyles said he received an email Tuesday from Taylor Stubblefield, who set the record of 316 at Purdue from 2001-04.

“He told me it was a great accomplishment,” Broyles said. “He also told me the biggest accomplishment in his life was being able to say he's a better man than a football player. I think that's my aspect on it all. Football has allowed me to grow as a man.”

Stubblefield is currently the receivers coach at Central Michigan.

Chasing records

Broyles caught his last pass in the third quarter of the Texas game. If OU wanted to, it could have gotten Broyles the all-time reception record in the Cotton Bowl against Texas.

Stoops said he and staff thought about it with the Sooners holding a 45-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

“We haven't left guys in to get records in those kinds of situations in the past. We don't want them to get hurt,” Stoops said. “We'll just wait and he'll get it when it comes within the flow of our offense. He still had 12 minutes to go if we wanted to throw him four more balls.”
