Rainout may be pushing Bedlam to May series

NORMAN — With Tuesday’s Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game canceled due to rain, it is unlikely the teams will meet until the three-game Bedlam series May 10-12 in Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

The reasons the game is unlikely to be rescheduled are the already compacted schedules both teams have and the importance of the weekend Big 12 Conference series.

After this week, the Sooners only have two potential midweek dates open. It has an open slot next week and the other comes prior to the conference series against the Cowboys.

However, OU cannot reschedule the game to May 7. The reason that date is open is because it is during finals week.

April 9 would work just fine for OU, but the Cowboys are already scheduled to face Oral Roberts at ONEOK Field in Tulsa that night.

A Wednesday might be an option. Both teams played two midweek games during weeks in March and that would seem like a possibility.

The only problem with that scenario is that those five-game weeks were prior to the start of conference play. Neither team wants to over-tax its pitching staff heading into a conference series.

OU coach Sunny Golloway said Monday, playing the Cowboys once early in the season didn’t mean much in terms of preparing for the Bedlam series later in the year. The pitchers used in a midweek game typically differ from the weekend. Lineups also can change greatly in six weeks, too.

“More than anything, the games are fun to play,” Golloway said. “The fans enjoy them. The athletes on the yard really enjoy them. I think if the coaches could stay calm and get some sleep at night, they would have a chance to enjoy them. It’s good.”
