Sooners’ Ricketts is named Big 12 Female Athlete of Year

NORMAN — Already the owner of multiple career records, two National Player of the Year honors and a national championship, Oklahoma’s Keilani Ricketts was awarded one more recognition on Thursday.

Ricketts was named the Big 12 Female Athlete of the Year in all sports, becoming only the second Sooner to win the award after basketball player Stacey Dales won it in 2002.

Nominees were submitted by each university in the conference and voted on by both media as well as a fan vote. The award is based on athletic performance, academic achievement as well as participation in the community.

Ricketts’ accomplishments on the field were unparalleled in the last four years at OU. She led the team to back-to-back Women’s College World Series and led the team to its first national title since 2000 by going 4-0 in the circle during the Series and striking out 39 batters on her way to being named the tournament’s most outstanding player. She finished her career as the winningest pitcher in program history while also finishing with the most strikeouts of any Sooner.

Off the field, Ricketts was named to the Big 12 honor roll all four years and was a mainstay in the campus community on her way to graduating with a degree in communications. She was active in charitable activities, including assisting in relief efforts and spending time with a youth softball team after the May tornadoes in the state.

Ricketts was the fifth Sooner to win the award. Along with Dales, Sooner quarterbacks Sam Bradford, Jason White and Josh Heupel all won the award.
