NORMAN — He won’t be on the court until the fall of 2015, but Oklahoma basketball coach Lon Kruger secured a large piece of his 2015 recruiting class.
Akolda Manyang, a 7-foot, 250-pound center, at Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College has verbally committed to the Sooners.
There is a family connection that helped OU. Manyang is the cousin of former Sooner standout Longar Longar, who played at OU from 2004-08.
Manyang, who attended high school in Minnesota, averaged 8.5 points and 5.7 rebounds a game last season at Indian Hills.
He chose OU over Arizona State and Minnesota.
The commitment is the first the Sooners have received for the 2015 recruiting class. How many more there are depends on how many scholarships OU has to offer in the fall of 2015.
D.J. Bennett is the only returning senior from last year’s team. TaShawn Thomas transferred in from Houston and has one-year of eligibility. Kruger said OU is working on an appeal to the NCAA to have Thomas declared eligible to play this season. Typically, transfers have to sit out a season when transferring from one Division I school to another.
If the NCAA clears Thomas to play this season, OU would have two more scholarships to offer in 2015. If he has to sit out, it would have one more.
