Average Owen Field ticket running $150; Red River Rivalry much more

NORMAN — Starting the season as a national championship contender makes season tickets a better investment for Oklahoma fans.

Ticket website vividseats.com released its 2014 College Football Tickets Report this week. The Sooners have the seventh most expensive tickets of the upcoming season, with a median price of $134. The average price on the secondary market for a game at Owen Field is $150.

The Red River Rivalry ranks as the fifth most expensive regular-season game heading into the season. The Oct. 11 meeting at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas has a median price of $395 and an average price of $474.

The only other game involving a Big 12 Conference team that made the top 25 list of ticket prices is Oklahoma State’s game against defending national champion Florida State in the season-opening Cowboys Classic in Arlington, Texas.

The Sooners are also the biggest road draw in the Big 12 Conference. According to Vivid Seats, they increase the ticket price by 77.5 percent when they are the visiting team.

Texas came in at No. 12 in terms of most expensive tickets. The average price to a home game is tops in the Big 12 Conference at $188. However the median price is cheaper than OU’s at $120.

Kansas State landed at No. 17 with a median price of $100. The average price for a Wildcats game is $114.

Oklahoma State is No. 18 with a median price of $99. The average price for a game at Boone Pickens Stadium is $126.

Among the 10 teams in the Big 12, games involving OU, Texas and OSU as road teams are the only ones that have a major impact on ticket prices.

The Longhorns’ road games drove up ticket prices by 64.3 percent. The Cowboys pushed the price up 19.8 percent.

Kansas State, Iowa State, West Virginia and Kansas visiting another Big 12 stadium seems to have an adverse effect. The Wildcats drove down the average ticket price by 3.1 percent, the Cyclones by 3.7 percent, the Mountaineers by 7.6 percent and the Jayhawks 20.4 percent.
