NORMAN — For the second straight major tournament, the Americans performed well but couldn’t bring home the gold.

After losing to Japan in the final of World Cup of Softball two weeks ago, the United States national team, which features Oklahoma players Lauren Chamberlain and Destinee Martinez, competed in Canada at the Canadian Open Fastpitch tournament. After sweeping the round-robin, including a victory over Japan, the United States fell short in the playoff bracket.

In the tournament’s semifinals, the Americans again met up with Japan, and their rivals came out on top, defeating the United States 5-0. That loss didn’t eliminate the team from title contention, but a 2-1, extra-innings loss to Australia on Monday did. In that game, the United States had several scoring opportunities, including a bases-loaded, no-outs situation in the fifth inning, but were unable to muster enough run support to give Jessica Moore the win in the circle.

With the loss, the U.S. finished third in the tournament. Next up for the Americans is a Pan-American Games qualifier in Puerto Rico in August.
