Coale signs OKC standout

NORMAN — T’ona Edwards did not simply lead her high school team to a state championship. Guiding Oklahoma City’s Class 2A Northeast Academy to a 30-0 mark, she played a big role in the Vikings, making a case as the state’s best team in any class.

Now, Edwards will bring that leadership to coach Sherri Coale’s Oklahoma women’s basketball program after signing her National Letter of Intent, Coale announced Thursday.

“T’ona is a terrific athlete who gives us immediate depth at the point guard position,” Coale said. “She is a proven winner and she led her team to a state championship this year. And, she is a competitor.”

Standing only 5-foot-5, Edwards averaged 16.7 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals for Northeast this past season.

Before winning a state tournament in which no game was closer than 16 points, the Vikings also knocked off several top programs from larger classes, including Southmoore, Del City, Bixby, Midwest City and Millwood.

Edwards moves the Sooners’ incoming newcomer class from three to four players.

OU had already signed Carl Albert’s Gioya Carter, Shaya Kellogg (Ames, Iowa) and Derica Wyatt (Nashville) last November.
