TRINITY, Texas — The Oklahoma men don’t need to worry about receiving an NCAA appointment for golf’s postseason.
As a top-15 program, the Sooners are in. That being the case, perhaps OU can relax long enough to make up some ground on the final day of the Big 12 championship, being played at Whispering Pines Golf Club.
The Sooners began the day in fifth place, yet just two strokes out of third. With a chance to move up Saturday, OU instead went backward.
After a third-round 300 — an average 3-over par 75 per counted score — the Sooners are in seventh place, only leading Kansas and Kansas State.
Still just 12 strokes back of third-place Baylor, 10 back of fourth place Iowa State and six back of both TCU and Oklahoma State, OU remains in position to make up ground. Only now there’s just 18 holes left to make it happen and, given that, the race for the conference title appears to be limited to Texas Tech (866) and Texas (867).
Beau Titsworth, the Sooners’ No. 5 man, led the team Saturday with a 1-over par 73. At 2-over 218 after three rounds, Titsworth is in sixth place in the medalist standings, trailing TCU’s Julien Brun by six strokes.
No. 4 man Max McGreevy was next Saturday with a 74, while the rest of the team — Micheal Schoolcraft (76), Michael Gellerman (77) and Charlie Saxon (80) — struggled.
In the medalist race, Brun, at 5-under par 211, leads Texas’ Beau Hossler by three strokes and Iowa State’s Sam Daley and teammate Kramer Hickok by four strokes.
