Sooners celebrate senior day with run-rule Bedlam win

NORMAN — The Big 12 title already in hand, all that was left for Oklahoma in Sunday’s regular-season finale against Oklahoma State was to pad its postseason resume and honor its three seniors.

Brittany Williams made it a Senior Day to remember.

Williams was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day and finished with a career-high six RBIs, including a three-run home run in the first inning that set the tone for OU’s 11-3, five-inning run-rule victory over its Bedlam rivals.

Williams, batting in the four-hole after slugger Lauren Chamberlain missed the game with a swollen knee that will undergo an MRI today, made the most of the opportunity. She added three singles and a run scored go along with the six RBIs and also recorded two putouts at first base after moving into the infield in Chamberlain’s absence.

“It felt pretty good,” Williams said of her big Senior Day game after receiving the Bedlam Cup with her team after the Sooners completed the season sweep of the Cowgirls. “I was just trying to make adjustments from yesterday and take my hacks at it.”

The other two seniors, Destinee Martinez and Javen Henson, also contributed to the victory, OU’s 12th in a row. Martinez went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and Henson made an impressive defensive play on a hard-hit ball near second base. The class advanced to the Women’s College World Series three years in a row and has a chance to make it four straight this season.

“I know they won’t settle for anything less,” coach Patty Gasso said of the trio. “I like that they didn’t try too hard today trying to be spectacular on Senior Day. They all did something to help us today.”
