Sooners falter against Hokies

BLACKSBURG, Va — Finally, Oklahoma came up on the short end against a top-25 team.

In the midst of an up and down season, Sooner soccer has shined against it’s toughest opponents, winning and tying two games against No. 22 Oklahoma State and tying No. 25 Baylor.

Sunday, at Virginia Tech, however, was a different story. Though OU managed to make it a game after falling behind two goals, it was the No. 15 Hokies adding a pair of late tallies to claim a 4-1 victory.

It was the Sooners’ last non-conference game of the season. OU has four regular-season games remaining: at home against Kansas and TCU folllowed by road matches at West Virginia and Iowa State before the Big 12 tournament begins Oct. 31 in San Antonio.

OU (4-7, 0-2-2 Big 12) got its only goal from Katharine Nutman in the 78th minute, making it a 2-1 game after the Hokies led 2-0 at the half behind goals from Ashley Meier and Katie Yensen.

Jazmine Reeves put the game away for the Hokies with a goal in the 82nd minute. About 5 minutes later, Ellie Zoepfi gave Virginia Tech its fourth score.

The Sooners were outshot 17 to 6. OU goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire made five saves. Virginia Tech’s Dayle Colpitts made four.

OU’s coldest game of the season, it was 46 degrees and raining during in Blacksburg Sunday.

The Sooners are back at John Crain Field when Kansas visits at 7 p.m. Friday.
