HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It’s not yet half over, but the Oklahoma men have much ground to make up if they’re going to challenge for Big 12 golf supremacy.

Though only three of 10 teams — Texas, Oklahoma State, TCU — completed the 36 holes scheduled on Day 1 of the 72-hole conference tournament, the Sooners may feel a sense of urgency beginning this morning when they arrive back at Prairie Dunes Country Club to complete their second round.

Texas, after rounds of 290 and 281, sitting at 11-over par 571, is six strokes in front of Oklahoma State and seven strokes in front of TCU.

Strangely, the three teams that finished their second rounds, are Nos. 1, 2 and 3 on the overnight leaderboard.

Baylor, each of its players between holes 14 and 16, is 27-over par and in fourth place. Next is Kansas State, with each Wildcat between holes 16 and 18, in fifth place at 29-over par. Next is OU, with each Sooner between holes 14 and 17, at 30-over par.

Texas Tech (31-over), Kansas (34-over) and Iowa State (34-over) round out the field after Day 1.

Texas’ Brandon Stone leads the medalist standings at 3-under par following rounds 70 and 67. Oklahoma State’s Talor Gooch is next after rounds of 70 and 69.

The nearest Sooners are Beau Titsworth and Abraham Ancer, both 6-over par with the rest of their second rounds still to complete. Titsworth will return to the 17th hole and Ancer to the 15th.

Also for OU, Michael Schoolcraft is 7-over through 32 holes, Will Kropp is 13-over through 34 holes and Charlie Saxon is 14-over through 35 holes.

The Big 12 includes three top 20 teams: No. 5 Texas, No. 12 TCU and No. 18 Oklahoma State. Three others are in the top 50: No. 33 OU, No. 42 Texas Tech and No. 46 Baylor.
