Collins, Sooners in control at Central Regional

NORMAN — Emily Collins kept it going and so did the Oklahoma women on the second day of the NCAA Central Regional golf tournament Friday at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.

Collins began the day atop the medalist standings after a bogey-free 67 in Thursday’s opening round and closed Friday still atop the leaderboard after a second-round 70 that has her 7-under par after 36 holes on the 6,298-yard, par 72 layout.

Collins leads Mississippi State’s Ally McDonald, who’s a stroke back after consecutive 69s. Three strokes back of McDonald is a trio of golfers that includes OU’s Anne-Catherine Tanguay.

Meanwhile, led by Collins and Tanguay, the Sooners fired off the day’s best collective second round, shooting 2-under par 286 to stand at 7-under par 569, six strokes in front of Duke (284-291).

It would seem to be a two-horse race for regional team title.

After the Blue Devils, Florida is 20 strokes back of the Sooners at 589, Arizona State and Coastal Carolina are another stroke back at 590 and Texas Tech, UC Davis and Mississippi State are all another stroke back at 592.

The Sooners would love to claim an individual and team championship today, but the real drama may back in the pack. A 24-team field, only the top eight will advance to the NCAA tournament, set to begin May 21 in Athens, Ga.

After 36 holes, the national tournament cut-line is between Texas Tech, UC Davis and Mississippi State, all in a three-way tie for sixth, and nine other teams all within 10 strokes of the trio: Michigan State and North Carolina State (592); TCU (593); Wisconsin (595); SMU (598); Wake Forest (600); Iowa State, Washington and Indiana (601).
