Stoops one victory away from breaking Switzer’s OU win record

NORMAN — Bob Stoops can become Oklahoma’s all-time winningest coach Saturday with a victory over Kansas State. Stoops is currently tied with Barry Switzer at 158 career wins.

What’s ironic is Stoops’ first chance to get the record comes against one of his former bosses and mentors in Wildcats coach Bill Snyder. Stoops was a defensive assistant at Kansas State from 1989-95.

Stoops doesn’t see the irony.

“Winning there would be great for our season and this season for all those reasons,” he said. “Outside of that, Coach Snyder and I aren’t going to play. We have teams and staff and a bunch of people working with us. It’ll be one team against the other.”

OU defensive coordinator Mike Stoops, who spent seven seasons as an assistant under Snyder at Kansas State, said the Kansas State coach is someone both owe a debt to.

“Coach Snyder has given us a great opportunity. We owe a great deal to him professionally. He taught us a lot of important elements of coaching — preparation, the details. He’s been a mentor in a lot ways to us,” he said. “It would be somewhat nostalgic to do it up there, but we’re not really into all that.”

Tulsa Washington reunion: OU freshman linebacker Dominique Alexander will see some familiar faces across the field Saturday against Kansas State.

Alexander played at Tulsa Washington. The Wildcats have three former Hornets — wide receiver Tyler Lockett, defensive back Dante Barnett and offensive lineman Keenan Taylor — on the roster.

Lockett is on of the best receivers in the Big 12 and Alexander said he’s been looking forward to playing against him.

“I’ve never played against him. He was my high school teammate and one of my best friends. It’s going to be fun playing against him,” Alexander said.
