BATON ROUGE, La. — With Saturday’s game Oklahoma center fielder Max White tied Keith Drumwright (1973-76) for most career games played with 239.
Of course, with Saturday’s 11-1 loss to LSU ending the season, there’s no chance of the senior breaking the mark.
“It’s emotional,” White said while holding back tears Saturday night. “It means the world. It’s been an honor to play for Coach Golloway. We’ve been to three Super Regionals in four years. This career has been fun. These guys have done amazing things for me. It’s been a great year.”
White joined shortstop Jack Mayfield, third baseman Garrett Carey, pitcher Jake Fisher and backup infielder Dusty Dishman in playing their final game Saturday night.
Uncharacteristic start: The Sooners lost despite scoring in the first inning and taking the lead. Prior to Saturday night’s game, OU was 19-5 when scoring in the first inning and 28-5 when scoring first.
Bludgeoned at the end: The loss dropped OU to 0-4 over its last two Super Regional series.
The Sooners went 0-2 at South Carolina last season. Over those four games, they have been outscored 23-2, scored no more than one run in any of the four games and been shutout twice.
Draft update: A trio of Sooner southpaws were selected on the final day of Major League Baseball’s Amateur Draft Saturday.
Juniors Ethan Carnes and Billy Waltrip and Fisher were drafted in Saturday’s rounds.
Waltrip was the fourth OU player selected, going 349th overall, in the 12th round to the Colorado Rockies.
Carnes was taken by the New York Yankees in the 21st round, 644th overall. Shortly after, Fisher was selected in the 22nd round, 664th overall, by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Four Sooner signees were also drafted Saturday.
Pitchers Alec Hansen (Loveland, Colo.; 739th overall) and Octavio Rodriguez (El Paso, Texas; 993rd overall) were taken in the 25th and 33rd rounds, respectively, by the Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox. Cody Thomas (Colleyville, Texas), who signed to play football at Oklahoma, was drafted 914th, in the 30th round, by the Yankees.
Shortstop Sheldon Neuse was picked in the 32nd round by the Texas Rangers.
Another delay: The game was suspended between the fourth and fifth innings by a 50-minute weather delay. Every super regional OU has played since 2010 has had at least one game delayed by weather. Its opener at Virginia in 2010 included a three-hour rain delay. The opener of its 2011 series at South Carolina was postponed after six innings.
The difference between those delays and Saturday’s was it never actually rained to during the delay in Baton Rouge.
