Boomers have time to turn it around

NORMAN — Don't let the 0-4 record fool you.

That's what Shannon Enfield, general manager of the Cleveland County Boomers, wants you to believe and with good reason.

He put together a full roster for his Les Beckham League Connie Mack summer baseball team, but his roster's been under attack by senior trips, the commitments of underclassmen to play for their high school summer team, not to mention players unavailable or at less than full strength as a result of their participation in tornado cleanup.

So, the Boomers may not have a winning record. Still, there's plenty of time for things to come together before the summer postseason arrives. Also, they finally have a home game.

The Boomers meet the Enid Majors at 7 p.m. today on the Hillsdale Baptist College diamond, just north of Indian Hills Road on the west side of Interstate 35.

Enfield's hoping for a crowd.

Roy Smith, Southmoore principal, is throwing out the first pitch. Any money collected at the gate tonight and the rest of the season will be disseminated through the Southmoore football booster club and given to the families of Southmoore student athletes that lost their homes in the May 19 tornado that struck Moore.

Enfield is hoping that Southmoore football coach Jeff Brickman will join Smith in throwing out the first pitch tonight. If both are available, they'll be throwing to Tre Ewards and Bobby Pierce, former SaberCats playing for the Boomers this summer.

Despite the record, the Boomers have already proven their ability to compete.

“We have led in all four games but lost leads due to lack of pitching and available players,” Enfield said. “I have 20 on our roster but had 10 players last Monday and 11 Friday.”

The Boomers may not be at full strength until they play the South Plains Classic in Oklahoma City June 26-30.

Tonight is the beginning of a busy week for the Boomers. After nine innings at Hillsdale, they'll play nine more against OKC Sandlot at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dolese Park in Oklahoma City. Friday, it's a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m., back at Hillsdale, against the OKC Bulls.
