Sooners third in Big 12 tourney

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Oklahoma came back strong. It wasn’t enough to claim a conference championship, but it should leave the Sooners in a good place heading into NCAA competition.

Firing the best single round of the tournament on the final day of the Big 12 men’s golf championship, Oklahoma jumped from fifth place to third, only falling to Red River rival Texas and Bedlam rival Oklahoma State.

The Longhorns claimed the conference crown with rounds of 290-281-288 to finish at 19-over par 859, four strokes in front of Oklahoma State (285-292-286 863) and 10 strokes in front of the Sooners (296-293-280).

TCU, at 871, placed fourth, followed by Kansas State, at 891. The Horned Frogs and Wildcats were followed by Baylor (895), Texas Tech (897), Kansas (899) and Iowa State (904).

OU’s Abraham Ancer placed third overall with rounds of 71-74-70—215, trailing only Texas’ Brandon Stone, who won medalist honors after finishing at even-par 210, and Oklahoma State’s Talor Gooch, who finished at 213.

Still, it was the bottom of the Sooner lineup that really came through for Oklahoma, as both No. 3 man Will Kropp and No. 5 Charlie Saxon closed with Wednesday 69s.

The Sooners now wait on their NCAA regional assignment, which will be announced May 6. NCAA regional play begins May 16.
