MANHATTAN, Kan. — Just when it looked like the Oklahoma women were finding their way, everything fell apart Wednesday night at Kansas State’s Bramlage Coliseum.
On a night Nicole Griffin played one of her best offensive games as a Sooner, it was nonetheless not enough as Kansas State proved too tough to stop, particularly from 3-point land, eventually exiting with an 86-78 victory.
That’s not the way the Sooners hoped to enter the first chapter of this season’s Bedlam Series, which comes Saturday when No. 11 Oklahoma State visits Lloyd Noble Center.
The difference was 3-point shooting.
The Wildcats canned 50 percent (11 of 22) of their tries, while the Sooners managed just 21.1 percent (4 of 19).
Also, the Sooner that had come alive recently, going on a five-game scoring binge, senior shooting guard Aaryn Ellenberg, was perhaps the most challenged shooter on the court, finishing just 1 of 11 from 3-point land. Only accuracy from within the 3-point arc allowed her to shoot 7 of 18 from the floor and finish with 16 points.
Griffin finished with 23 points and a team-high seven rebounds, canning 8 of 12 from the field. Also, point guard Morgan Hook finished with 21 and six assists against just three turnovers, turning in what might have been her best offensive game since conference play began.
Still, it wasn’t enough.
Leticia Romero led the Wildcats with 23 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 2 of 3 from 3-point land. Katya Leick added 21 on 7-of-12 marksmanship, including 5 of 9 from 3-point land. Kindred Wesemann added 14 off the bench.
Making matters worse for the Sooners, they led 40-35 at the half before the Wildcat onslaught really began. Kansas State shot 59.3 percent (16 of 27) after the half and 66.7 percent (4 of 6) from 3-point land.
The Sooners fell to 13-8 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12 Conference. The Wildcats moved to 9-11 overall and 3-6 in league play.
