Sooners ready to tangle with Cowgirls in season finale

NORMAN — Finals are over, and soon so too, will be the Big 12 softball season. Top-ranked Oklahoma can exit the regular season with a conference championship if it can hold off rival Oklahoma State in a three-game Bedlam series that kicks off with a 6 p.m. game tonight at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

For coach Patty Gasso at least, there’s no other way she’d rather end the regular season.

“I’m glad it’s Bedlam,” she said. “I know they’ll be ready to play and we always have competitive games against each other. I like the intensity it will bring.”

OU (44-4, 12-2 Big 12) is in line to obtain the No. 1 overall seed heading into NCAA regional play, and the series against the Cowgirls (30-23, 6-9) is the Sooners’ final chance to tune up before the postseason begins Thursday.

It’s also a chance for OU to win its second Big 12 title in as many years. The Sooners are up a game on second-place Texas and will likely need two take at least two-of-three from OSU to lock up the conference. Because one of Oklahoma’s games against Kansas was canceled last weekend, the Sooners and Longhorns likely won’t end up with the same number of games played, and the conference title will come down to winning percentage.

Not that Gasso is worrying about it.

“We’re just focusing on getting better,” she said. “If we can do that, the rest will take care of itself. And now that finals are over, we can focus on just softball. I know having finals can stress the team out.”

In OSU, the Sooners will face a team on a hot streak.

The Cowgirls turned around what had been a disappointing conference season by taking two of three against No. 6 Texas at home last weekend, including a 1-0, nine-inning win on Friday and another one-run victory on Saturday.

The Cowgirls enter tonight having won four of their last five games.
