Sooner move up in BCS, polls

NORMAN — Oklahoma moved up to No. 10 in the BCS standings Sunday following the 38-30 victory over Texas Tech. The Sooners are one of four teams in the top 18.

Undefeated Baylor, which OU will face Nov. 7 at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, Texas, moved up to No. 6. The Red Raiders dropped five spots to No. 15. Oklahoma State is at No. 18.

The Sooners also moved up in both major polls, making a four-spot jump in the Associated Press Top 25 to No. 13. They also advanced to No. 9 in the USA Today coaches poll, marking their highest ranking of the season.

Handling tempo: The Sooners haven’t run much up-tempo offense this season, but they did a couple times. The most noticeable was the touchdown drive to start the third quarter.

“We’re still picking and choosing when we have opportunities to go tempo. It worked today when we did,” OU coach Bob Stoops said.

On the other end, the Sooners didn’t seem to have any problems getting lined up against the Red Raiders. Alignment was an issue in the previous two games against Texas and Kansas.

“I was really proud defensively that we were set all the time and had very few mistakes with alignments and adjusted,” Stoops added.

Handling the weather: The game started about 75 minutes late because of a pregame thunderstorm. The circumstances were eerily similar to the Sooners’ and Red Raiders’ meeting at Owen Field in 2011. That game also was delayed due to weather and Texas Tech shocked the Sooners that night, ending a six-season home winning streak.

Stoops said OU started preparing players for the possibility the game would be delayed on Thursday.

“We talked about it Thursday, about regardless of the weather we need to come out ready to play,” Stoops said.

He did see differences in the two games, however.
