PURCELL -- Republican Wilson Lyles and Democrat David Perry will face each other in the general election for District 2 McClain County commissioner after winning the primaries Tuesday.

"When it's all local guys and friends you don't know what's gonna happen, but I was just thankful it turned out the way it did and the campaign never got ugly," said Perry, who became interim commissioner after the former commissioner, Loyd Tucker, died March 11.

Seven men filed to run for the position, all of whom have known each other for decades. Perry said the campaign stayed friendly.

"There was never a foul word said about anybody," he said.

Perry received 587 votes, or 65.29 percent of the Democratic votes, according to pre-provisional results from the McClain County Election Board.

"We was just thankful that it turned out the way it did," Perry said. "I'm thankful we didn't have a runoff. I want to thank those guys who were my opponents."

The campaign will continue for Lyles and Perry, who will face off in the general election Nov. 4.

Also in the Democratic primary, Bryan Jenkins received 136 votes, Ronnie Little got 102 votes and Andy Madden received 74 votes.

Lyles got 193 votes, or 53.31 percent of the Republican votes, according to pre-provisional results from the election board. He could not be reached for comment via telephone at press time Tuesday.

Also in the Republican primary, Jerry England received 108 votes and Kent Smith got 61 votes.

In the race for county clerk, Lois Hawkins beat out Debbie Brown for the Republican nomination. No Democrats filed candidacy, so Hawkins won her third term as county clerk.

Hawkins got 1,163 votes, or 63.04 percent of the vote, while Brown got 682 votes.

"Well, I'm kind of excited right now," Hawkins said Tuesday night after most of the votes were counted. She said she didn't know what to expect about the election, but trusted that what would be would be.

"I've been calm through this," she said. She said she wanted to thank the people who helped her get re-elected.
