NORMAN — Under the advisement of Norman Police Department, Kennedy Elementary School was placed on a soft lockdown for approximately 15 minutes Tuesday morning, according to Shelly Hickman, director of public information and community relations for Norman Public Schools.
Hickman indicated that all students and staff were brought inside the building for an indoor recess, allowing NPD to work an incident involving a suspect.
Police spokesman Captain Tom Easley said officers made a traffic stop near 12th Avenue SE and Boyd Street. During the traffic stop, Easley said, is when the driver of the vehicle decided to run from officers. The lockdown was simply a precautionary measure, Easley indicated.
“Since it was in the vicinity of Kennedy Elementary, and there were children on the playground, we decided to recommend they lockdown,” Easley said.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. and the suspect was in custody shortly after.
