EL RENO — More than 6,000 head of cattle were sold during the first sale day at the OKC West Stockyards in El Reno since a massive EF5 tornado tore through the facility nearly two months ago.
State agriculture officials confirmed Thursday 6,121 head of cattle were sold during the first Wednesday sale since the May 31 twister wiped out nearly every building on the property, including the sale barn. The huge tornado was the widest top-of-the-scale EF5 ever at a record 2.6 miles.
Most of the destruction came toward the end of the tornado's 16.2-mile path near the stockyards along Interstate 40, where several motorists were killed.
With the stockyards out of commission, OKC West officials redirected cattle to the Woodward Livestock Auction while repairs were made.
