Boat needed for water rescue

NORMAN — A woman trapped in high water on Franklin Road had to be retrieved by boat.

Despite high-water barricades, the motorist drove her small, four-door car through high waters. Her car stalled about 100 yards west of the intersection at Northeast 24th Avenue and Franklin Road.

Norman firefighters responded around noon and realized they did not have the equipment to retrieve her.

“There’s some swift water,” Deputy Chief Jim Bailey said. “We needed a boat.”

Norman called Moore for mutual aid in the water rescue because they have a rubber boat, Bailey said.

While Norman firefighters have performed at least a dozen rescues this morning, this is the first that required a boat.

Bailey said water can be higher and have more of a current than motorists realize.

“Don’t drive into high water,” he said. “Especially don’t drive around barricades.”
