NORMAN — It took extra innings, but the Cleveland County Boomers are still alive in the Connie Mack state tournament.
The Boomers defeated the OKC Drillers 5-4 in eight innings on Friday, setting themselves up for a chance to keep playing. The Boomers, whose roster is filled with players from the Cleveland County and surrounding areas, jumped out early on Friday before having to fight for the win.
They struck first, scoring four runs in the first inning to take control, but coach Cody Davis said the bats went dead from there. The Drillers fought back, tying the game in the bottom of the seventh, before the Boomers got back on top, this time for good, with a run in the top of the eighth.
The Boomers will face Southmoore at 9:30 a.m. today, and play again at 6 p.m. if they win, staying alive for a chance to fight through the loser’s bracket and into Sunday’s title game.
“We’ve just got to keep fighting,” Davis said. “Keep winning games, that’s all there is.”
