Filing for four, non-partisan Norman City Council positions will open for three days beginning Jan. 13, election board officials announced.
Two-year terms in Wards 2, 4, 6 and 8 are open. Filing will be ongoing from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 13 through Jan. 15 at the Cleveland County Election Board Office, 641 E. Robinson, Suite 200.
The election will be held April 1, 2014, and a runoff election, if needed, will be June 24. Council member Jim Griffith, Ward 6, has announced he will file for re-election. Council member Tom Kovach, Ward 2, said he does not plan to file for re-election.
There is a filing fee of $50 for Norman City Council. This filing fee must be in the form of a Cashier’s or Certified Check and must be made out to the “Secretary, Cleveland County Election Board”. In lieu of a filing fee Candidates may file by petition. Petitions for Council Members must contain 50 signatures of registered voters eligible to vote for the office sought.
Those who intend to file for office will be required to complete a Declaration of Candidacy form which is available for download on the Cleveland County Election Board website, www.clevelandcountyelectionboard.com.
Forms are also available at the Election Board office, 641 E. Robinson, Suite 200 in Norman. The form must be notarized and the Election Board cannot notarize candidate filing papers. Also, because Norman City Council Elections are non-partisan, when completing the Declaration of Candidacy form, all candidates should leave their political party blank.
