An adoption event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Norman Animal Welfare Center, 3428 Jenkins Ave., in order to find animals a home before construction begins on the shelter.
The adoption event is hosted by Friends of the Animals of Norman (FAN). As always, the cost of adopting an animal is $60, cash only, and includes all shots, spay/neuter and microchip.
Saturday’s event was scheduled to be the final adoption event, however, because of delays due to checking for asbestos and getting the buildings certified for demolition, FAN member Jeff Bloomgarden hopes to hold additional adoption events on Sept. 28 and Oct. 5.
“The reason for these events is the forthcoming demolition of the Adoption Center, which houses 20 dogs and a number of cats,” Bloomgarden said. “We are very concerned because we are losing 20 kennels for the dogs which will increase the likelihood that more animals will be euthanized.”
FAN is a nonprofit volunteer organization that supports the staff and animals of the municipal animal shelter that strives to help create a more humane environment for the animals and reduce the number of animals euthanized, Bloomgarden said. They also encourage responsible pet ownership and work with the animal welfare center to increase the number of adoptions.
“Our long range vision is to eliminate the need for euthanizing animals and to create a future in which all animals live in humane, loving environments,” Bloomgarden said.
FAN volunteers will be assisting with the adoption event and will continue to do fundraisers to support the shelter. Those who are interested are encouraged to volunteer, he said.
Volunteers typically go to the shelter, walk the dogs, socialize with cats and help out at adoption events such as these, Bloomgarden said.
“We’re trying to develop our volunteer base so we could assist the shelter even more,” he said.
