NORMAN — Cleveland County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested two more people for looting in the Newalla area, bringing the total of arrests to six in the past two weeks.
Scotty Young Ash, 34, and Johnny Dale Ash III, 23, both of Chickasha, were arrested and jailed Tuesday for disturbing a disaster area.
Deputies were alerted Tuesday morning to two men possibly stealing scrap metal from Woodside Drive, an area that was ravaged by the May 19 tornado. When a deputy arrived to the area, the deputy found the men and questioned where they got the scrap metal that was in their pickup and trailer.
Both admitted they picked up the metal from debris piles on Woodside Drive but didn’t have permission from any property owner to take the items. The men told the deputy their friend had permission but couldn’t advise of their friend’s name.
The men told the deputy they had been taking scrap metal from the disaster area for the past seven days. Both said they intended to sell the items and make a profit. They also told the deputy they had made several hundred dollars from previous metal sales they had taken from the disaster area.
Both men were arrested and booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center. Formal charges against the pair are pending.
Cleveland County Sheriff Joe Lester said taking anything from a declared disaster area without permission of the property owner is illegal. Since June 12, deputies have arrested six people. Four of those arrests have occurred in the last four days.
