NORMAN — The featured speaker at the Tyner Cornbread and Beans Luncheon, Friday, will be Sen. John Sparks. Sparks will speak on the challenges of the recent session of the Oklahoma State Senate.
The event will be held at Catering Creations, 3750 W. Main St. and is sponsored by the Cleveland County Democratic Party.
Sparks was raised on a ranch near Sulphur. He attended Harvard College where he was named All Ivy League defensive tackle and served as an intern for then-Senator David Boren. He returned to Oklahoma earning a law degree from OU. Then, he served as a legislative aide to Congressman Bill Brewster.
He has a strong commitment to public service. He has been President of the Cleveland County Bar Association and the Cleveland County Workforce Investment Board. He is a board member of Health for Friends and the Thunderbird Clubhouse and a dedicated volunteer for United Way. Other groups include the Sooner Rotary Club, Norman Chamber of Commerce, Oklahoma Farm Bureau, Oklahoma Cattleman’s Association and the Cleveland County Cattlemen’s Association.
He is a founding partner of the law firm, Odom, Sparks and Jones.
Sparks was elected to the Oklahoma State Senate in 2006 and was selected as the Higher Education Association’s Newcomer of the Year. He has also been honored by the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association as Legislator of the Year for his work on behalf of ranchers. He was re-elected for a second term for Senate District 16 in 2010.
Lunch for this event begins at 11:15 a.m. with the speaker beginning about noon. Attendees will dine from Catering Creations’ mini buffet. The meeting is open to the public.
