NORMAN — EDMOND — The Norman North girls fulfilled the destiny their season had pointed them toward Saturday morrning at Edmond Santa Fe where they claimed the Class 6A state cross country championship, crushing a field that included Norman High in a distant second place and Edmond Memorial a well back third.
Also, Norman North's Ben Barrett led the North boys to a third-place finish by winning an individual state championship, finishing about 10 seconds in front of his nearest challenger. Just as with the girls race, the Tiger boys also finshed a spot back of North, this time in fourth place.
Cross country is scored by adding the places of each team's top five finishers, while the places of each team's last two finishers are dropped. The sum of those places create a final score, and the lowest score wins. Under those parameters, the North girls finsihed with a score of 51, while NHS came in at 118 and Edmond Memorial at 122.
