NORMAN — Oklahoma has shifted to a three-man defensive line after 14 seasons playing in a four-man front. Defensive coordinator Mike Stoops has said the Sooners want to do both this season. Defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery said the three-man alignment best OU’s personnel when two-a-days started, but they’ve added enough depth to be able to change.

“Some guys were not gonna be around, and we said to have a four-man front’s gonna be tough when you don’t have all your guys,” Montgomery said. “We started messing around with it and it wasn’t too bad. Kids were picking it up, and I had some experience with it at Michigan under Greg Madison, so we just kinda took off and ran with it and it was doing well for us, and very easily we can go to a four-man front.”
