Blake Bell has only attempted 26 passes during his career. Obviously that will go up when he makes his first start Saturday at against Tulsa.
The game will mark the 22nd Bell has played in. Up until this year just about all those appearances were in OU’s short-yardage package. Bell was in there to run the ball.
But offensive coordinator Josh Heupel believes Bell will prove Saturday he can throw the ball.
“Yeah, through camp he really did. He has this week, too,” OU offensive coordinator Josh Heupel said when asked how Bell looked throwing the ball. “I’ve said it for a long time. The package that we used him in didn't give him a chance. We had Landry Jones who's, I don't know what, third in the history of NCAA passing. It's tough to put the guy in there and drop back a bunch with him when you have Landry on the sidelines. Just the situation and who else was there didn't allow us to throw it a lot with him.”
