NORMAN — It was a packed house at Journey Church Friday morning as volunteers for the United Way Day of Caring gathered for a kick-off party prior to heading to area worksites.
The kick-off celebration acted as an oportunity for United Way of Norman officials to announce the $901,854 raised for the agency thanks to Pacesetter companies. Today also marks the official kick off for the community phase of the 2013 United Way Campaign.
University of Oklahoma men’s basketball coach Lon Kruger spoke during the rally thanking volunteers for their service.
"What you are doing today is about we, it is about community, it is about others. It’s amazing what the world would be like if everyone, every day got up and thought about what they could do to help someone else. So many times we are going so fast, we are so concerned about what is going on, about what we are going to do today to help ourselves. Again, what you are doing today is so valuable and so satisfying and I know you are going to feel that if you don’t already," Kruger said.
This year's goal for United Way is to raise $2.5 million.
