Morning Star Center for Spiritual Living presented a check May 4 in the amount of $7,500 to the Ark-Ok Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for a community water well in a Tanzanian village in Africa.
"We raised this money within our own ranks in less than five months," Adrian Savage, co-chair of the Center's well fund, said. "We aren't a big organization, but we've got some really big hearts among us. It's a great feeling to provide a water well that will help save lives and make life better for many people."
The well fund was launched after Paul Kleine of the ELCA spoke at a Sunday service at Morning Star concerning the devastation the Massai people of Tanzania suffer for lack of a clean water supply.?Kleine reported that a third of the preventable deaths in the region are attributed to contaminated water. His video presentation substantiated the ELCA's efforts toward providing clean water, as well as supplies and schools to remote villages there.
"We were so moved by the Massai and the ELCA's accomplishments that we just had to pitch in and do this. With their experience and contacts in place, coming up with the money was the simple part," Jim Barnett, co-chair of the well fund committee, said.
Gina McCook will be traveling to Tanzania in June with Kleine and his organization to experience first-hand the living conditions of the Tanzanian people and how they are being improved.?
