TULSA -- Local Jehovah's Witnesses had thousands of reasons to rejoice regarding their just-concluded 2008 "Guided by God's Spirit" District Convention.
They were delighted that many in the community attended the first of three conventions expected to bring more than 20,000 people to Tulsa from 110 cities in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas.
The second convention opens at the University of Tulsa's Reynolds Center today. The third gathering has been set for Aug. 29-31 at Tulsa's Downtown Convention Center.
The peak attendance of 6,104 at the first conclave included Witnesses and non-Witnesses alike. They came to the Reynolds Center for a program that focused on what the Witnesses say is mankind's vital need -- guidance from God provided through his holy spirit. Some program part titles show the scope of subjects covered.
"Young People -- Safeguard Your Relationship with Jehovah!" highlighted Friday afternoon. Bible-based encouragement was given to help young people draw close to God and benefit by accepting his advice.
"Empowered by Holy Spirit," presented Saturday afternoon, highlighted the role of holy spirit in helping individuals young and old to resist temptation, cope with discouragement, withstand harmful peer pressure and endure adversity.
"Do Not Leave 'the Love You Had at First'" was the title of a full-costume drama featured Sunday afternoon. It depicted attitudes and situations that likely existed among Christians at the end of the 1st century.
"The convention's theme," said William V. Shell, one of the convention's organizers, "really drove home the point that God has a personal interest in and love for sincere humans."
The Witnesses, Shell said, were particularly happy to welcome 42 who joined their ranks by getting baptized in an ordination ceremony on Saturday. Witnesses view baptism in the name of the holy spirit as vital to receiving God's guidance and continued blessing.
The three-day event ended Sunday. The audience showed appreciation for the convention with prolonged applause. "We were delighted that so many from across the four-state area joined us for the convention," Shell said. "The convention program included information that can benefit us all."
