NORMAN — Author Rilla Askew will be the speaker at 10 a.m. Sunday at The United Church of Norman-UCC.
Askew’s presentation, “The Cost,” will address racial disparities in the criminal justice system, America’s school-to-prison pipeline and the effect these conditions have on families.
She will offer personal witness to incidents of racial profiling, which have affected people close to her. Audience discussion will follow her presentation.
The author of four novels and a book of stories, Askew received the American Book Award, Western Heritage Award, Oklahoma Book Award and Arts and Letters Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Her essays and short fiction have appeared in Tin House, World Literature Today, Nimrod, Prize Stores: The O. Henry Awards and elsewhere. Her latest novel is “Kind of Kin.”
Currently she teaches in the MFA writing program at the University of Arkansas.
A reception to meet Askew begins at 9:30 a.m. at 1017 Elm Ave.
