NORMAN — I am certain we all love gifts, especially free gifts.
Imagine waking up Christmas morning, dashing to see what gifts are waiting to be opened under the tree and finding that each item has a price tag. For this gift, you must pay $5 or for that larger one, $20. We would certainly feel as if Scrooge or the Grinch had spoiled the festivities.
What is a gift? Well, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary offers this definition: A notable capacity, talent or endowment, something voluntarily transferred by one person to another without compensation, the act, right or power of giving.
Who would have thought that the simple word “gift” was so rich in meaning? Yet, in a moment that blazed through the universe and caused even the angels to behold in wonder, there was the gift by God
“And the angel said unto them, ‘Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people: for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this is the sign unto you: Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men in whom he is well pleased.’” — Luke 2:10-14
Here, in a small corner of the world, was born Jesus Christ wrapped in love, rich in meaning and beyond words bound by definition.
This Christmas as you unwrap your gift or as you behold others unwrapping theirs, never forget the greatest gift delivered gracefully by God, exactly when we needed it, at exactly the right time.
“So then as through one trespass the judgment came unto all men to condemnation, even so through one act of righteousness, the free gift came unto all men to justification of life.” — Romans 5:18
