NORMAN — Author and theologian Walter Brueggemann will be in Norman next week for a series of lectures and discussions. Brueggemann also will deliver a Sunday sermon April 21 at First Christian Church.

Brueggemann’s visit is hosted by the Oklahoma Institute For Bible Literacy. First Christian Church, 220 S. Webster Ave., will be the host church for the three lectures with discussion.

Brueggemann will be in Norman April 19-20. He will speak at 7 p.m. April 19 and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 20. A light breakfast will be served April 20. The cost for all three the lectures is $15.

Brueggemann will be the only speaker Friday evening. However, Saturday’s sessions will include Brueggemann along with a panel of two speakers: Dr. Alan T. Levenson, the Schusterman Professor of Jewish Intellectual and Religious History at the University of Oklahoma, and the Rev. Dr. Lisa Wolfe, associate professor of religion and endowed chair of Hebrew Bible at Oklahoma City University.

The focus of Brueggemann’s discussions will be his latest book, “Journey to the Common Good.” Brueggemann also will sign copies of his book.

“It’s a pretty exceptional opportunity for the Norman community to host a scholar like this,” said David Spain, senior pastor of First Christian Church.

In addition to his lectures, Brueggemann will preach at First Christian Church on April 21. Brueggemann’s sermon is titled “Beyond Anguish,” from Revelation 7:9-17. Worship service times are 8:40 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

Sunday School, which also will be led by Brueggemann, will be from 9:40 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary.

Other area contributors to Brueggemann’s visit are First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church and St. Stephens United Methodist Church.
