NORMAN — The United Church of Norman-UCC’s speaker series, “The Progressive Sermon I Always Wanted to Preach,” will feature its second speaker, Dr. Lavonn D. Brown, at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
The six-part series is intended to address evolving theological thinking taking place in progressive Christian churches. Subsequent speakers include Dr. Barbara Boyd, Dr. Tom Boyd, the Rev. Mike Bumgarner and the Rev. Phil Fenn. The United Church of Norman-UCC meets at the United Ministry Center, 1017 Elm Ave.
Brown, an Oklahoma native, is a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has been pastor of Baptist churches in Texas and Oklahoma since the mid-1950s and served the First Baptist Church of Norman as pastor for 29 years. Brown is the author of seven books and many other publications. He is married to artist Norma Brown and they have three sons, Bob, Scot and Nathan.
The Rev. Hugh Wilson and Brown worked together on the beginning of the Norman Ministers Fellowship, which is still active today.
