NORMAN — The Rev. Amy Venable, pastor of Stephens United Methodist Church of Norman, received the Denman Evangelism Award at the recent Oklahoma Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church hosted at Oklahoma City University.
The award is given for outstanding work in Christian evangelism. The award is named for Dr. Harry Denman, lay evangelist, whom Dr. Billy Graham called “My mentor in evangelism.”
“It has been a wonderful surprise to hear that I was one of the two clergy selected for the Denman Evangelism Award,” Venable said. “Since we are not one of the bigger churches in the conference, we are not used to winning awards for numbers of people filling our pews. But I’m so pleased to have this affirmation of our work in welcoming folks and in creating something week after week that nurtures people, one way or another.
“My mother reminded me that my grandmother and my uncle had met Harry Denman decades ago and held him in very high regard as a man who lived simply and tried to live out the gospel: Sharing the love of Christ with all.”
Since Venable began her ministry at St. Stephens, the church has added 164 new members.
