NORMAN — A Legislative Advocacy Training will be offered to the Norman faith community at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Norman, 555 S. University Blvd.

Social justice advocates, community organizers and non-profit social services staff are especially invited. Hosted by the Norman Justice Alliance and the Oklahoma Conference of Churches, the training includes a review of a glossary of legislative terms, questions to ask regarding potential legislation, the path of a bill and other legislative processes. Strategies for effective grass roots advocacy will be presented including messaging and building community coalitions, as well as communicating with legislators.

Presenter Shirley A. Cox is an attorney and serves as the legal services developer for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. As a public policy advocate for 15 years, she has developed, monitored and advocated on legislation that affects Oklahomans. She has assisted in bill drafting, testified at legislative committee meetings.

The Rev. Dr. William Tabbernee, executive director of the Oklahoma Conference of Churches, will provide a presentation on the Social Justice Ministry Network which tracks legislation and links people of faith across the state with OCC’s Social Justice Advocacy efforts to better educate elected officials on important issues.

“Oklahoma faces many issues where the voice of the faith community is critical, such as poverty, children’s issues, the needs of elders and people with disabilities, healthcare, education, immigration, criminal justice and creating opportunities to lift people up.” said Ed Kearns, NJA chair.

Participants are asked to bring donations of paper towels, tissues or toilet paper for the Family Violence Shelter-Women’s Resource Center.
