NORMAN — St. Michael’s Episcopal Church is hoping to put the fun back in fundraiser.
The church, 1601 W. Imhoff Road, will host a Spring Serenade with Champagne and Strawberry Shortcake at 7 p.m. on April 14. Tickets went on sale the beginning of March and can be purchased from Dave Zittel, acting chair of the St. Cecilia Guild, which supports the music ministry of St. Michael’s.
“Even though the ticket price is $25, $10 will be a charitable donation. There will be some tax credit for those who would like a tax credit,” Zittel said.
The fundraiser was organized by the St. Cecilia Guild, which was organized in the past year. Money raised from the evening will go toward extra singers, music and the church’s long term goal to purchase a piano.
“We will do an hour and 15 minutes of music. It will be opera, operetta, which includes Gilbert and Sullivan, ballads, some folk songs and one person indicated he would do something Gaelic. There will be a couple of religious pieces,” Zittel said. “Most of the music will be solos or duets done by the choir members. There will only be a couple of pieces involving the whole choir.”
After the concert, which includes the voices of Susan Wood, Carrie Hendricks Min, Dr. Sandra Gall, Bob Mansfield, Dr. Lawrence Larsen, David McDonald and John Hartley, the audience and choir will retire to the ingathering space for champagne and strawberry shortcake.
Last year, Zittel asked the choir if the group did a concert, what would they like to do?
“One of the things that came out was a dessert evening or a concert of music. This is sort of a blend of the two. On top of that, Nancy Hancock sang in Standford University choir when she was in college and they used to do a fundraiser of Spring Serenade with Champagne and Strawberry Shortcake. So we borrowed on that idea,” Zittel said.
This is the first year for the event, but Zittel hopes to make it an annual tradition.
“Audience members can plan to hear some really wonderful music and enjoy a nice service of strawberry shortcake that is being catered by Catering Creations. It will be a fun evening of different kinds of music,” Zittel said.
Guest accompanist will be Kevin Smith, music director of the Cimarron Circuit Opera Company.
Seating is limited and ticket sales will end April 8. Those interested in attending, can purchase tickets from Zittel by calling 834-8764 or emailing him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
