Church will host assembly

NORMAN — First Christian Church Norman will be host to about 300 Oklahoma Christian (Disciples of Christ) member gathering for the biennial assembly May 2 to 3. In the theme of “Growing in Grace,” the assembly will include worship, study, music and fellowship.

Workshops will be lead by Dr. Charles Kimball, presidential professor and director of religious studies at OU; the Rev. Dr. Lisa W. Davison, professor of Hebrew Bible at Phillips Theological Seminary and the Rev. Dr. D. Newell Williams, president and professor of modern and American church history at Brite Divinity School.

Jeff Champeau, of Norman First Christian Church, will be installed as moderator, replacing Martha Hatt of Enid. A highlight of the business session will be a report by the regional pastor search committee led by the Rev. Michael Oberlender, pastor of First Christian Church of Chickasha.

Dr. Williams’ workshop topic will be “Disciple 101: The Disciples of Christ in One Sentence — Disciples Theology, Disciples Polity.” Dr. Davison will address “For Such A Tie As This: The Book of Esther as a Call to Action.” Kimball’s topic will be “Lethal Religion: Exploring the Explosive Mix of Politics and Religion in Judaism, Christianity an Islam.”

About 150 Disciples of Christ youth will meet concurrently in Norman with topics and activities in the theme of “Grace-FULL.”
