OKLAHOMA CITY — Christmas cheer spread in December 2012 during a concert hosted by Oklahoma members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is now being shared across the country this holiday season, thanks to a national syndication.
“Joy to the World: A Christmas Musical Celebration,” originally performed at the Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall, has now been syndicated to more than 90 percent of television markets nationwide.
KSBI-TV President and CEO Vince Orza worked with local church leadership to share the concert with other broadcast entities around the country. The response was enthusiastic: 182 of the top 200 markets in the nation have picked up the concert, including each of the top five markets.
“The church put together an excellent choir, had an amazing conductor and orchestra,” Orza said. “It’s as good as any performance in the country.
“What’s noteworthy is that people with nothing to do with Oklahoma City or the LDS Church have said that this is great entertainment and we want to carry it.”
Church members from 44 congregations, along with many other members of different denominations, volunteered their talents for the multiple 2012 choral and orchestra performances to share the message of the birth of Jesus Christ.
They were led by Craig Jessop, former conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and current dean for the Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University.
“I think the church and the community have a great deal to be proud of,” Orza said. “It wasn’t just the church; people from many denominations came together. This is what religion is supposed to do when everyone works together.”
Network affiliates across the country are broadcasting the concert, including ABC, CBS, CW, FOX and NBC. Each station will show the performance a minimum of two times between Nov. 23 and Jan 1. Check local listings or call station representatives for specific dates and times. The church and affiliated performers are not profiting financially from the syndication.
The church is again hosting a “Joy to the World: A Musical Christmas Celebration” from Dec. 20-21 at the Rose State Performing Arts Theatre in Midwest City.
Performances — led by guest conductor Utah State University Director of Choral Activities Dr. Cory Evans — will be at 6 p.m. and at 8:30 p.m. both days. The concerts will include performances by the Oklahoma City Handbell Ensemble.
Tickets are available through the OKC Civic Center box office by phone at 297-2264 or online at okcciviccenter.com. Tickets are $10 and cover operating expenses.
