Free concert for storm victims

NORMAN — Survivors of the recent severe weather are invited to concerts to be presented by the Central Saints Chorus. More information about the Choir can be found at centralsaintschorus.org.

The July 13-14 concerts in Oklahoma City and Moore tell the story through music and narration of the Mormon pioneer journey from Nauvoo, Ill. to the Salt Lake Valley in the 1840s.

“It’s a story of a people who managed to find hope after everything was taken from them,” said Zach Tanner, who directs the interfaith 40-voice choir and 27-piece orchestra. “They are forced to leave everything behind and build new lives, with just their faith to rely on.”

Bryce Gorrell, a University of Central Oklahoma student, sings the role of Brigham Young.

“It’s a story that I think we all share,” Gorrell said. “We’ve all experienced loss of some kind. There is life after loss. God doesn’t always prevent bad things from happening, but He’s with us as they happen.”

Many of the choir and orchestra members have volunteered with Mormon Helping Hands, helping to clean up debris after the May 19, 20 and 31 tornadoes in central Oklahoma. Admission to the concerts is free, but guests are encouraged to donate to one of the many relief organizations. The LDS Church Humanitarian fund, which set up a command center in Moore to mobilize volunteers and donate supplies, is at donate.lds.org.

The one-hour concerts are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. July 13 at the Oklahoma City Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5020 NW 63rd St., and 7:30 p.m. July 14 at the Oklahoma City South Stake Center, 498 N. Santa Fe Ave. in Moore.

Also scheduled to sing solo roles are Chuck Edgington, Robert Ward, Kelly Bentley, Lindsay Goodson and Catherine Thomas. Music for the concerts, “Saints and Pioneers” was composed by Rob Gardner.
